Snowmass Village, Colo.—March 17, 2014—Today, The Town of Snowmass Village announced the hiring of Julie Ann Woods, AICP/ASLA as Director of Community Development. Her start date is March 24th.
During her 30- year career in planning she has managed the land use approvals for significant investments in tourism including resort hotels, over 500 units of affordable housing, and three new ski base villages. She brings expertise in ski area redevelopment, tourism-based facilities, affordable housing, arts and recreation master planning, historic preservation, community facilities, and business support services.
Woods is no stranger to the Roaring Fork Valley. A 17-year Snowmass Village resident, she served as the Director of the City of Aspen’s Community Development Department from 1997 to 2004 where she managed building, zoning, planning, historic preservation, and environmental health divisions. Public projects during her tenure included a new school and world-class recreation campus, and golf and tennis club.
Over the last two years, Julie Ann was Director of Planning and Community Development for the City of Pueblo and Pueblo County, leading a team of 16 staff members. As Director, she worked closely with business and arts groups and Historic Pueblo Inc. to spur arts industry development within the historic downtown area, promoting regional tourism. In January, Julie Ann was awarded Pueblo Downtown Association’s “Downtowner Award” in appreciation for her “Extraordinary Efforts to Make Downtown Pueblo the Vibrant Heart of the Community.”
In addition, Woods served as president of the Elk Mountains Planning Group, Inc., a small private practice that provides planning, historic preservation, landscape architecture, and public process services to governments, developers, and businesses specializing in resort and mountain communities.
“We are fortunate to have someone who has such a broad spectrum of skills and experience, and also possesses an intimate knowledge of our community,” said Gary Suiter, Interim Town Manager. “I’m confident that she’s the right person to lead us in a positive direction as we evaluate new and existing development opportunities.”
Julie Ann has worked as a planner at the local, county, and regional levels of government, and worked for DHM Design in Denver and Economic Research Associates in Chicago. She is a member of the Colorado Chapter of the Urban Land Institute Real Estate, Tourism and Leisure Product Council, the American Society of Landscape Architects, and the American Planning Association and served as the National Chair of the Resort and Tourism Division of APA. She received her Bachelor of Science in Urban Planning from Michigan State University and her Masters of Landscape Architecture from the University of Colorado at Denver.
She and her husband, Jeff Woods—Aspen’s Manager of Parks and Recreation—raised their two children Elizabeth Woods (a member of the 2006 United States Ski Team), and Tim Woods (a ski racer and national-level competitive mountain bike racer) on Snowmass’s trails and mountains.
