Snowmass Village, Colo. – October 20, 2017 – The Colorado Chapter of the American Public Works Association (APWA) has announced that the new roundabout at Brush Creek and Wood Road will be the recipient of the APWA Small Community Transportation Award. Opened to the public just last fall, the new roundabout was selected to receive the 2017 award. The final landscaping and sculpture was finished on the roundabout this summer.
According to the APWA nomination, “the project serves as a traffic engineering example in innovation to increase traffic service levels, public safety, and pedestrian safety.” The project was also selected to receive the award due to its ability to transfer best practices to other communities, and the level of cooperation that was displayed between the developer, the Town, contractors, businesses, and the community.
“A project of this magnitude is never easy, but all of the players involved knocked it out of the park.” John Baker, Town Public Works Superintendent said in hindsight of the project. “During all phases of construction, we received a tremendous level of cooperation and support from the community.” Baker added. The complexity of the project was increased due to the many different elements and players involved. Trail connections, sidewalks, retaining walls, new bus stops, and a mini-roundabout was all installed in unison with the project. It also required the financing and coordination of many different partners.
The roundabout improvement project was officially a collaboration between the Town, RELATED, East West Partners, Gould Construction, SGM, Sopris Engineering Partners, and the community. It was primarily financed by the Base Village developer as part of their development agreements tied to the construction of the project.
The award will be presented to the Town on October 23, 2017 at the annual Colorado APWA conference.
