Snowmass Village, Colo.—Today, the Town of Snowmass Village announced that Town manager Russ Forrest has accepted the position of Assistant County Manager for Economic and Community Development with Gunnison County, Colo.

Gunnison County is 3,239 square miles—78 percent of which is Federal Land owned by the USFS, BLM, and Curecanti National Recreation Area. It includes the ski area of Mt. Crested Butte.

“It was with equal parts excitement and sadness that I accepted this new position with Gunnison County,” said Forrest. “On one hand, it offers me roles and responsibilities that align with my interests and experience particularly in planning, economic development, and sustainability. However, I lament leaving a dedicated staff, and a remarkable community.”

Forrest became Snowmass Village Town Manager in March, 2007. During his six-year tenure, he has played an instrumental role in increasing government transparency, instilling values of customer service in all Town operations, leading strategic planning at various levels of the organization, and ensuring the long-term financial health and economic well being of the Town in the midst of economic recession.

"When Russ came six years ago, he really inserted himself into our community fabric and proved to be an immediate asset to Snowmass Village," said Bill Boineau, Snowmass Village Mayor. "It will be an incredible challenge to replace him, but recognize that this is a big opportunity. Gunnison County is lucky to have Russ, and we want him to know that he can always call Snowmass Village home."

Forrest will continue to be the Town Manager until leaving to assume his new position later this summer. Prior to his departure, he plans to complete several outstanding projects which include hiring a Director of Snowmass Tourism.

“I thank all Town staff and the Snowmass Village community for everything they have provided my family and I personally and professionally over the past six years,” said Forrest. “Snowmass Village is truly an exceptional place, and that is due to all the individuals that live, work, and play here. I look forward to watching—albeit from a different seat—how the community continues to grow, evolve, and thrive.”
