1. How do I dispose of household hazardous waste?

2. Is it acceptable to place large items, furniture, or overflow trash next to a dumpster or trash container?

No. Please contact the Pitkin County Landfill at 970-923-3487 for instructions on disposal of large items. Special pickups can be arranged on a case-by-case basis by calling the solid waste and recycling division at 970-923-5110.

3. Why wasn’t my trash picked up today?

Missed pickups are usually due to one of the following:

• Failure to get the container to the street by 7:00 a.m.


• Obstructions, such as vehicles, that block access to the container


• Overfilled containers and/or prohibited items

The Town is not responsible for the customer’s failure to use solid waste and recycling services properly. If the Town is responsible for the missed pickup, please contact the solid waste and recycling division at 970-923-5110 or report a concern on this website to correct the problem.

4. Does the Town provide services for disposing of yard waste?

Yes, as long as the yard waste can fit in a regular trash bag and does not take over the dumpster. Landscaping companies are not to use Town dumpsters for commercial waste. For commercial or overflow yard waste, please contact the solid waste and recycling division at 970-923-5110 to arrange for a special pickup or commercial dumpster.
