An Old Dog Learns New Tricks

Snowmelt Road Receives Efficiency Upgrades

Commonly known as “Snowmelt Road," Carriage Way was installed in 1967 when the ski resort first opened. Due to its steep pitch, snowmelt capabilities were deemed essential. Over 50 years later, the road and heating equipment remains as vital as ever to the lodges, condominiums, and buses that use the road daily. It relies on a series of boilers located up and down the hillside. Over the past few years, the Town of Snowmass Village has invested millions of dollars to make the road more efficient.

In 2019, half of the boilers were replaced with high efficiency versions. The other half are scheduled to be replaced in 2021 and 2022. In addition to utilizing more efficient equipment, the Town is also implementing state of the art technology to control the operation of the boilers. Town staff finished installing weather predictive controls to determine when to run the boilers. In the past, the boilers powering the snowmelt system would run all the time through the entire winter. Now, they are allowed to idle down when the skies are clear, and they automatically power up when there is snow in the forecast.

The result has been an immense savings in energy and money for the Town. In 2020 alone, the series of boilers for Snowmelt Road used approximately 30% less energy. This resulted in a savings of approximately $75,000, and reduced the Town’s carbon emissions by approximately 1.1 million pounds of CO2 in 2020.  According to Town staff, these savings are only the beginning. The Town expects to save even more when the remaining boilers are replaced.

Coffey Place Winners Announced

Deed Restricted Homes Purchased Through Lottery

The Snowmass Village Housing Department held the lottery for the Coffey Place homes on Wednesday, January 13th. 15 lucky individuals and families were selected to move forward with the purchase of the deed-restricted homes. The subdivision, comprised of 6 duplex units and 9 detached units, are currently under construction and named in memory of the late Joe Coffey, the Town's former Housing Director.

The new homeowners are expected to complete the qualifying and purchasing process over the coming weeks. Move in dates will become available over the next several months as the units are completed.

Some of the individuals that will be moving into Coffey Place will be moving out of other deed-restricted homes and rentals in the Village. The Housing department currently has two deed restricted units for sale on the Town website, tosv.com. Details on these housing opportunities and the Coffey Place subdivision can be found online by following the link below.

"When in Doubt, Throw it Out"

The Do's and Don'ts of Recycling in Snowmass

The Town of Snowmass Village began offering single-stream recycling over 6 years ago, allowing our residents and guests to place all recyclables into a single container. This makes recycling easier than ever.

However, contamination of our recycling stream remains a major problem. Plastic bags, trash bags, plastic wrappers, diapers, food waste, and clothing items are NOT recyclable, and they are consistently showing up in recycling containers. Items such as these contaminate the entire dumpster, and they can cause ALL of the recyclables to be rejected and sent to the landfill. Please make sure you are disposing of items responsibly, and "when in doubt, throw it out!"

Below is a quick overview of what is and isn't allowed in our single-stream recycling program, but you can find additional details, guides, and information at www.tosv.com/recycle.
